BENKOVAC, June 6 (Hina) - The town assembly of Benkovac on Thursday
evening unanimously adopted a decision to proclaim retired
Croatian general Ante Gotovina as an honorary citizen of that
southern town. #L#
The citation of the award says that Gen. Gotovina should be given
credit for being one of those who contributed, to the largest
extent, to the liberation of the town of Benkovac and its
surrounding from the Serb rebels' occupation which lasted several
years.
The charter on Gotovina's proclamation as a freeman of Benkovac
will be conferred on his family at a special session of the local
authorities, set for 13 June which is the day of Benkovac.
The retired general has been on the run since June 2001 when the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia unsealed
an indictment against him in which he is charged with crimes against
humanity and violations of the law and custom of war. An
international warrant for his arrest has been issued, too.
