ZAGREB, May 8 (Hina) - In Croatia 2,645 men are currently in non-combatant community service, the justice ministry reported Thursday in response to a question by Jozo Rados of the Libra party on this form of military service.

In its written reply, the ministry says that the institute of
conscientious objection, i.e. the possibility of serving non-
combatant military, was introduced in Croatia in 1990 and the
number of requests made and granted to that effect are increasing
year after year.
From just one request in 1991, the number grew to 8,556 last year and
by April 17, this year's requests number 2,406.
The Libra party started the initiative to cancel military service.
