ZAGREB, Nov 19 (Hina) - Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) director Mirko Galic, presenting in the Sabor a report on the work of the HRT directorate and council from November 2003 to June 2004, said he was especially happy to see "the level of independence and freedom of HRT activities reaching European standards". He conceded, however, there were some problems, too.

"Freedom and independence are conditional on professional maturity. The HRT has some problems in that segment," Galic said.

The HRT accomplished its basic social and legal functions regarding its programmes.

With regard to business activities, a 10-percent rise in income was registered in the said period. The rise in spending was, however, higher, namely 14 percent, he said.

Galic said the radio and television equipment had been completely digitalized and that in this segment the HRT was on equal footing with the modern radio and television stations in Europe.

"At the moment our priority is to enhance our production and quality of programmes," Galic said.

A report on the work of the Programmes Council was submitted by Council chairman Zdenko Ljevak, who said the body was successful in its activities although some of its members had worked under pressure from the media.

The position of the HRT must be objective and independent, reporters must avoid being exposed to politicians' pressure and politicians must "get their hands off the media", clubs of the parliamentary parties said later during a discussion on the two reports.

Damir Kajin of the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) warned that those who controlled the HRT also ruled the country and that national television must not be under the influence of any political option.

Slaven Letica of the Party of Rights (HSP) believes that the main problem of Croatian Radio and Television lay in the fact that editors and journalists were not educated well.

It could not happen anywhere in the world that the national television calls a person such as Aleksandar Tijanic, who was the "Serbian Goebbels and war-monger," to guest in its TV show.

The parliament will continue the debate on the matter next week.
