However, this will not happen by Mesic tendering his resignation for one day, reporters covering a session of the World Veterans' Organisation's permanent committee for European affairs in Zagreb, were told on Wednesday.
Asked to comment on the idea published in the media that the elections could be held on a nonworking day, December 19, two days before the constitutional deadline, if the president of the republic resigned for one day, Mesic said he was surprised with the proposal and that he would not do that.
"Imagine how it would be to conduct the entire procedure in only one day," he said.
Commenting on a reporter's remark that judging by the candidates' statements the campaign would be peaceful and therefore possibly unnecessary, Mesic answered jokingly that this proposal could be accepted, while Kosor said that the "campaign will be tough, but without below-the-belt blows".
Asked how much his campaign would cost, Mesic said it would cost around four million kuna as in the previous campaign, while Kosor said that she had just been nominated and would inform the public about the matter on time.
Asked who would fill her post if she won the elections, Kosor said the prime minister was conducting consultations on that.
