ZAGREB, Oct 5 (Hina) - By announcing a protest rally in front of the
Agriculture and Forestry Ministry for Wednesday, the Croatian Farmers
Association (HSS) only wants to politicise the situation as farm subsidies
cannot be paid to farmers until all legal conditions are met, Agriculture and
Forestry Minister Petar Cobankovic said on Tuesday. The payment of subsidies for wheat should have started in September, but
so far only seven counties have processed requests for subsidies, which is a
precondition to start allocating them, the minister said, adding that the
announced road blockades would do farmers no good.
It is curious that the HSS is making objections about regulations which
were adopted "at the time when their political option was in power, because the
HSS is obviously an interest group of the Croatian Peasant Party," Cobankovic
said.
