ZAGREB, Sept 15 (Hina) - The defence team of General Ante Gotovina
has expressed disagreement with the position of some Croatian officials that
the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal decided to keep generals Ivan Cermak and
Mladen Markac in custody in order to force the runaway Gotovina to
surrender.Lawyers for Gotovina on Wednesday issued a press release "expressing
surprise" at such statements by some senior Croatian officials, claiming that
"those were rash and unfounded accusations against ICTY judges, which can
affect the position of the tribunal's indictees".
Gotovina's lawyers assess that the trial chamber has not turned down the
request for the provisional release of Cermak and Markac because of the
Gotovina case.
Lawyer Luka Misetic, who said the chamber's decision was not surprising,
called on Croatian officials to be more cautious in their statements.
