The construction of the first mosque and Islamic centre in Osijek is to begin in one or two years' time and will be completed in six to seven years.
The Islamic community and the Osijek city government will in the coming days sign an agreement on the purchase of 3,280 square metres of land in the Bikara residential area where the mosque and the centre should be built. Funds for that purpose, amounting to about one million euros, will be ensured by an Arab country, Efendi Poljic said.
The Islamic community in Osijek has been active since 1927. There are now some 1,000 Muslim believers in the city and an additional 5,000 in the entire county.
Mayor Kramaric commended the Islamic community for contributing to the enhanced coexistence of the city's numerous religious communities.
