Gov't accepts reports on war crimes prosecution, asylum commission

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, April 8 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Friday adopted a report on the implementation of a strategy for the investigation and prosecution of war crimes committed during the 1991-1995 war.

According to the report, Croatia has steadily improved its activities in prosecution of war crimes cases. The establishment of separate departments within the county offices of the Chief State Prosecutor, the formation of war crimes departments in courts and the establishment of special police teams will upgrade the quality of treatment and prosecution of such cases, according to a press release issued by the government after its closed-door session on Friday.

The government formulated a bill on ratifying an agreement between Croatia and France on mutual protection of classified data.

It accepted a report on the performance of the commission in 2010. The commission settled 57 appeals against the Interior Ministry's decisions, turned down 36 appeals, and suspended proceedings in 15 cases. Subsidiary protection was granted to four asylum seekers and two asylum seekers were granted asylum.

During 2010, a total of 259 people applied for asylum in Croatia, as against 120 in 2009.
