Croatian jurists find Serbian law to be in contravention of UN conventions

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, March 28 (Hina) - Croatian legal experts on Monday delivered to the Jadranka Kosor cabinet a study in which they elaborated their position that the 2003 Serbian law on the organisation and competence of state agencies in war crimes proceedings was contrary to European standards and United Nations conventions.

"Correspondingly, certain steps and initiatives have been undertaken to reach regional agreement on the protection of human rights," said Zeljko Hrovatic, who added that human rights protection could be undermined with the application of the disputable Serbian legislation.

Horvatic, president of the Croatian Academy of Legal Sciences, told this to reporters after experts held a meeting in the Croatian government's offices.

The said law enabled Serbia to initiate proceedings against Croatian war veterans.

The case of Croatian Tihomir Purda, who was arrested in January in Bosnia and Herzegovina on an international warrant issued by Serbia and later released, triggered off debates on that Serbian law.
