ZAGREB, May 13 (Hina) - The Croatian Government on Thursday discussed subsidies to agriculture and fisheries, and proposed a series of new subsidies for vegetable, medical and aromatic herbs and calf breeding.#L# Funds to be given as aid to elderly farm households will increase from the current 7,200 to 12,000 kuna annually. There will be no more limits of two million kuna which has so far been the highest amount given as the government's support to a farm annually. The Ivo Sanader Cabinet, instead, proposes that subsidy users be classified into two categories -- one covering those who can be given up to 75,000 kuna annually and the other for beneficiaries receiving amounts above this figure. Subsidies above 75,000 kuna would be proportionally reduced by four percent and this system would be applied as of 1 January 2005. The government also sent amendments to the law on government-subsidised housing construction (so-called POS) into urgent parliamentary procedure. The changes envisage that not only citizens who buy flats but also those who plan to build a house or reconstruct the existing one can count on government subsidies. The government moved amendments to the law on the war veterans' fund, which would make it possible for Homeland War veterans to obtain, free of charge, seven percent of shares in the Croatian Telekom (HT) and seven percent of shares in the national oil company (INA). The minister of sea, transport and tourism, Bozidar Kalmeta, announced better connections between islands and the mainland this summer and lower fares for the transport of cars and trucks by ferry as of this autumn. For this purpose the government is planning to earmark 290 million kuna. Also at today's session, Boris Antunovic was appointed acting head of the National Food Agency. (1EUR =7.45 kuna) (Hina) ms
