The protocol, which among other things extended the term of office of
European Human Rights Court judges from six years with the possibility
of re-election to nine years without the possibility of re-election,
was signed on the last day of the 140th session of the Council of
Europe Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg.
Apart from Croatia, the document was signed by another 15 members of
the Council of Europe, while Britain and Switzerland announced they
would follow suit soon.
On the margins of the session, Zuzul met his counterparts from Malta
and Slovenia, John Dalli and Dimitrij Rupel, and Italy's
Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Roberto Antonione.
Dalli expressed his full support for the next phase of Croatia's
integration with the European Union, notably for Croatia to be given
candidate status and a date for the start of entry talks with the
European Commission.
Zuzul and Dalli agreed that relations between Croatia and Malta were
friendly and that there were no outstanding issues between the two
countries. They arranged meetings in order to boost economic
cooperation.
The session of the Ministerial Committee on Thursday morning was
addressed by Zuzul's aide, Neven Madey, who stressed the importance of
the European enlargement and supported the third Council of Europe
summit due to take place in Warsaw in May 2005, the statement
concluded.
