In a joint leaflet issued on this occasion, the unions warn that
international capital and a ruthless struggle for profit threaten
workers' and human rights all around the world, with Croatian
capitalists obediently following global trends.
This year the union federations marked Labour Day separately.
One event was staged by the Association of Workers' Trade Unions of
Croatia and the Independent Croatian Trade Unions, while the other was
staged by the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia.
The unions organised an entertainment programme and prepared around
14,000 bean meals for distribution.
This morning President Stjepan Mesic attended the gathering and
extended his best wishes to citizens, saying he was doing so as a
citizen and not a politician.
He wished workers to be rewarded for their work and those without
employment to find a job. "If we want to join the EU, we want the same
level of protection for workers rights as in established European
democracies," Mesic said in a speech.
Labour Day has been marked in Croatia since 1890.
