"This is the biggest enlargement round in the history of the European
Union, but I am convinced that it is not the last. The process will
continue until Europe is united in peace and democracy," Prodi said in
a speech in the town square shared by once two separate towns.
Slovene Prime Minister Anton Rop also addressed the gathering.
Philharmonic orchestras from Trieste and Ljubljana earlier preformed
the overture from Verdi's opera "The Power of Fate".
The future of Europe in the new world order is in the strength of its
model of economic, political and social development, primarily in its
ability to stay united, Prodi said adding that the European tree had
grown stronger with every new enlargement round, including the latest
one which expanded the EU by 75 million new residents.
