"This historic moment marks the beginning of a new era in the life of
Europe, which has sent a strong message that the consolidation of
democracy and sometimes difficult reforms will be awarded," the
statement said.
Sanader said that the admission of the ten countries would be a
"historic day for these countries and their people". "I am sure that
Croatia will follow that road," he told a Government session on
Thursday, announcing that he would attend the EU enlargement ceremony
in Dublin on May 1.
"As of May 1 the history of Europe, which has been marked by divisions
and conflicts, will no longer be the same as before," the Prime
Minister said.
The Government said in the statement it was pleased that its efforts
had been recognised in the positive opinion of the European Commission
on Croatia's application for membership of the European Union.
At today's session, the Government is due to adopt amendments to
decrees that would enable unobstructed trade with the enlarged
European Union. The amendments will guarantee the equality of all EU
members in trade with Croatia as of May 1.
