ZAGREB, April 24 (Hina) - A commemoration of the victims and surviving
inmates of the World War II fascist concentration camp at Jasenovac
will be held on Sunday.#L#
Participants in the event will be addressed by Parliament President
Vladimir Seks, under whose auspices this year's commemoration is
held.
Annual commemorations at Jasenovac are held in turn under the auspices
of the president of the republic, the president of the parliament, and
the prime minister.
The commemorations are held to mark the break-out of some 600 inmates
from the Jasenovac concentration camp on 22 April 1945.
The camp was opened shortly after the establishment of the Independent
State of Croatia (NDH) in mid 1941 and was closed down only after the
end of WWII, in May 1945.
The chairman of the Jasenovac Memorial Area Council, Slavko Goldstein,
said that the number of Jasenovac victims as well as the actual
character of the camp, which was run by the Ustasha, had been
instrumentalised by all regimes.
