The congress will be attended by leaders of Socialist and Social
Democratic parties from European Union member countries.
The statement said that the participation of the SDP as an observer
would be very important in view of the influence this organisation has
in the European Parliament and the current situation in Croatia after
it received a positive opinion from the European Commission about its
application for EU membership.
During his two-day visit to Brussels, Racan is scheduled to meet
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, British Deputy
Prime Minister John Prescott, German SPD leader Franz Meuntefering and
the leader of Italy's Democratic Left (DS), Massimo D'Alemo.
The congress will discuss the PES manifest for European parliamentary
elections slated for June 2004, the new European Constitution,
security, population migrations, labour markets, women's rights and
policies aimed at young people.
