ZAGREB, April 8 (Hina) - The international advisory commission for the
reconstruction of the Old Bridge, the landmark of the southern Bosnian
city of Mostar, on Thursday held its last session at which it assessed
that the rebuilding of the bridge was successful. The ceremony of
reopening the bridge is scheduled for 23 July this year.#L#
The commission was set up eight years ago at the proposal of UNESCO.
The Old Bridge, built during the Ottoman empire, was destroyed by the
Bosnian Croat (HVO) artillery during the Croat-Muslim conflict in
1993.
The destruction of the bridge is cited in the indictment which the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
issued recently against six senior Bosnian Croat war-time officials.
Croatia's government earmarked about a half million dollars to
financially help the reconstruction of this monument.
