"Croatia has no alternative to cooperation with the Hague-based
tribunal. The cooperation implies the resolution of outstanding
issues, which is in Croatia's strategic interests. We need not agree
with indictments, particularly with some of their elements, with which
I personally do not agree. However, they can be refuted only in The
Hague. Everything else is just fairy tales. Croatia must not any
longer shun the truth because we paid a high price for the refusal by
the authorities some ten years ago to face the crimes. Iinstead of
prosecuting them, they kept them secret and that's why we must now
address the matter in a much more difficult manner," Racan said at a
news conference in the northern city of Cakovec on Tuesday where his
party marked the 59th anniversary of the liberation of the region of
Medjimurje from Hungarian occupation.
