The Defence Ministry's Public Relations Office said in a statement
that General Petkovic requested to be relieved of his duties for
personal reasons.
Petkovic was a commander in the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) in
Bosnia-Herzegovina during the war there.
Petkovic attended a meeting at the Justice Ministry in Zagreb on
Wednesday where he was informed of an indictment issued against him by
the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
Petkovic told reporters after the meeting that he would respond to the
tribunal's summons and appear in The Hague on Monday.
