ZAGREB/AMMAN, March 21 (Hina) - In an address to a Croatian-Jordanian
business forum in Amman on Sunday, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic
called for the promotion of economic cooperation between Croatia and
Jordan, the two countries he said "share similar economic prospects
and problems".#L#
"Croatia's main political and economic environment is Europe, but
there are many reasons why we should also build business, trade and
economic ties with non-European countries," Mesic said.
Commenting on similarities in the two economies, Mesic said that both
markets were of a similar size, that since several years ago they had
been regulating relations with other markets in line with global trade
standards, and that the process of privatisation was under way in both
countries.
Croatia and Jordan have similar problems regarding unemployment and
foreign debt, but they have modern communication infrastructure,
developing financial services and trained labour, Mesic said.
The president said that some solutions from the Jordanian economy were
applicable in Croatia, and vice versa. "We want to create an
atmosphere which would stimulate foreign investments, and your
industrial and business zones have already proven successful in that
regard," he said.
The president then spoke about tourism as Croatia's most important
branch of economy, calling for an exchange of experience in that
area.
Both countries are taking part in big infrastructure projects, and
Croatia believes that the linking of its ports with those in
neighbouring countries is a priority, Mesic said calling on Jordanian
business people to use Croatian ports in placing their resources on
the market.
Closing his address, Mesic called on Jordanian business people to
establish joint ventures with Croatian partners and expand bilateral
cooperation by entering the third markets together.
The head of the Croatian Chamber of the Economy, Nadan Vidosevic, and
his Jordanian counterpart Haidar Murad signed a cooperation
agreement.
After the forum, Mesic laid wreaths at the vault of the Jordanian
royal family. He is also expected to have a working lunch with King
Abdullah II.
The Croatian delegation will on the last day of their visit to Jordan
also meet Prime Minister Faisal Al Fayez and other senior Jordanian
officials.
