ZAGREB, March 16 (Hina) - Italy's Senate on Tuesday adopted a law on
Foibe Observance Day when tribute will be paid to local Italians who
were killed during and in the wake of the Second Wold War in Istria
and the Trieste hinterland.#L#
Under that law, the Observance Day will be 10 February. This date was
chosen as it was on 10 February 1947 that the Paris Peace Treaty was
signed under which Italy lost control over the regions of Istria and
Dalmatia, which had been under its rule after the First World War.
On 10 February every year, commemorations and similar events will be
organised in schools and other public facilities in order to inform
Italians of the events connected with the so-called foibe, Karst pits
in which murdered Italians were thrown. The commemorations will also
mark the departure of Italian refugees from the said areas to Italy.
With the adoption of the law, the Italian Senate also gave the
official status to the Istrian-Fiume-Dalmatian Museum and the History
Archives of Fiume (the Italian name for the Croatian seaport of
Rijeka) in Rome and committed to financially supporting these two
institutions
