"My advice to Croats is that they should not become fixated on the
possible date of accession, but should prepare for the first step,
that is, the possible start of negotiations," Verheugen said, adding
that the EU was not planning to form a new group for accession that
would include Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia.
"Among all the countries of the western Balkans to which we have
opened a far perspective of accession to the EU, Croatia is the most
likely candidate," Verheugen said in response to the question as to
whether after the admission of Bulgaria and Romania each country would
have to struggle to join the bloc on its own.
