ZAGREB, Feb 22 (Hina) - Croatia's school union "Preporod" said on
Sunday "the initiative of some incumbent government officials to make
the pensions of MPs who worked in the former Yugoslav republics even
with those of MPs who worked in Croatia was disgraceful".#L#
The union said such an initiative, which would be implemented
retroactively, "would be acceptable in principle if the pensions of
common people who worked in former Yugoslav republics were on the same
level as those of who worked in Croatia, which is not the case".
Daily press reported that the initiative was launched in February and
that it has been supported by the Economy, Labour and Entrepreneurship
Ministry.
The union suggests that the pensions of state officials be computed
the same way as those of the rest of the citizens: The union also
proposes that the highest amount of MP pensions be set because, in its
opinion, it is unfair that some MP pensions could amount to up to
12,500 kuna.
The union stresses that the pensions of teachers and professors, who
retire after 40 years, amount to about 2,000 kuna, while the pensions
of MP with only only 15 years of service and two years in parliament,
are at least four times higher.
"It would be immoral to request such a thing given that 750,000
citizens live on the verge of poverty and 320,000 are unemployed," the
statement said.
