KOPRIVNICA, Feb 18 (Hina) - The Croatian Farmers' Association (HSS)
leader, Ivan Kolar, has announced that this association does not
intend to stage protest rallies but would like to warn that it is
necessary to amend the law on subsidies in agriculture and forestry.#L#
Kolar, who held a news conference on Wednesday in the northern city of
Koprivnica, said the reason for calling the conference was the fact
that it had been the Croatian foreign minister and not the agriculture
minister who recently announced the possibility of free import of beef
and cattle from Austria.
"It would be very bad if foreign affairs created the agricultural
policy in Croatia. As a result of an increase in import, it will be
hard to sell domestic products, particularly pork and baby beef,"
Kolar said.
This is how countries where farmers receive subsidies free themselves
of their market surplus while nobody thinks of the age or quality of
the products. That is why this association strongly supports the
relevant ministry in attempts to have at least three billion kuna
earmarked in the state budget for national agriculture and help
Croatian farmers, Kolar said.
