ZAGREB, Feb 5 (Hina) - Zeljka Antunovic, vice president of the
strongest opposition party, the Social Democrats (SDP), held a news
conference on Thursday at which she commented on the new government's
latest steps.#L#
She said changes to the Law on Croatian Radio and Television (HRT)
should not be a government priority at a time when the social welfare
system was in disarray due to its falling under the jurisdiction of a
number of ministries and when the minister of health was dabbling in
everything except the current financing of his sector.
Antunovic announced the SDP would move that parliament consider a
report on the financing of the health sector in this year's first
trimester.
She labelled Health Minister Andrija Hebrang's intention to abolish
additional health insurance as ill-advised. She also said that he
would show compassion for doctors but not raise their salaries.
The SDP welcomes the announcement of a 4-5 percent increase in the
health budget, Antunovic said, adding that the party was also
interested in hearing about the current financing of the sector since
over the past four years, when the SDP was in power, the sector
operated well.
As for the announcement that the HRT Law would be amended, she said
that would constitute a political provocation whose main objective was
putting the media under political control. She said the existing Law
was in accordance with European criteria and that there were many
others in need of adjusting to European Union standards.
