ZAGREB, Jan 31(Hina) - The National Council of the ruling Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) on Saturday called an intra-party election and
convened a general convention for April 24 in the northern Adriatic
city of Rijeka.#L#
An intra-party election should take place by April 14 at the latest,
so that the 9th general convention could elect a new party leadership
for a term of four years instead of two as was provided for in the
previous statute, the HDZ leader and Prime Minister, Ivo Sanader, said
after the Council session.
Sanader hailed the statement made by the Chief Prosecutor of the UN
war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Carla del Ponte, in an interview
with Croatian Television on Friday, that she expected that "the new
Croatian government will fully cooperate with the Hague tribunal."
"I am pleased with her statement. I expect that her report to the UN
Security Council will be in the same tone and that the obstacles on
Croatia's path to the European Union will in that way be removed," the
prime minister said.
Sanader said that ever since he took office he had expressed the full
commitment of his government to cooperation with the tribunal as one
of the political conditions for Croatia's admission into the EU and
NATO.
