VUKOVAR, Jan 27(Hina) - The main hearing in the trial of 17 local Serbs resumed in the eastern Croatian city of Vukovar on Tuesday. The indictees are charged with war crimes against civilians and crimes against humanity and
international law, which they allegedly committed as members of Serb rebel units in the town of Lovas (in the Vukovar area) in 1991.
VUKOVAR, Jan 27(Hina) - The main hearing in the trial of 17 local Serbs
resumed in the eastern Croatian city of Vukovar on Tuesday. The
indictees are charged with war crimes against civilians and crimes
against humanity and international law, which they allegedly committed
as members of Serb rebel units in the town of Lovas (in the Vukovar
area) in 1991.#L#
Only one indictee, Ilija Vorkapic, is attending the trial, while the
other 16 are on the run and are being tried in absentia.
Three witnesses gave testimonies today, describing the harassment to
which the Croat residents of Lovas were subjected during the Serb
occupation of the town.
They described an incident when a large group of Croats was forced to
enter a mine field. Twenty-four people were killed and 15 were
seriously wounded in the incident.
The trial will resume on 25 February.
