Previously, a monument to Matija Gubec, the leader of a 16th century
peasant revolt in Croatia, standing outside the schoolhouse in
Tavankut near Subotica, was demolished twice -- on election day in
Serbia on December 28 and on New Year's Eve. Tavankut is also
predominantly populated by ethnic Croats.
