ZAGREB, Jan 3 (Hina) - Croatia's foreign trade logged a record high deficit in last year's January-November period, when it exceeded US7.1 billion, an amount surpassing exports by nearly 1.5 billion.

Stated in U.S. dollars, exports in the first 11 months of 2003
totalled 5.651 billion, an increase of 27.6 percent from the same time
the year before, while imports went up 30.7 percent to 12.776 billion,
the Central Bureau of Statistics has said.
The foreign trade deficit in the aforementioned period thus went up
33.3 percent from the same time in 2002, reaching 7.124 billion.
The import-export ratio was a mere 44.2 percent.
When stating figures in U.S. dollars, one must bear in mind the
exchange rate changes given that about 70 percent of Croatian exports
and 77 percent of imports are expressed in euros.
Stated in the domestic currency, the kuna, exports in the
January-November 2003 period amounted to 37.99 billion (6.23
billion), an increase of 8.7 percent from the same time in 2002, while
imports totalled 85.88 billion (14.1 billion), an increase of 11.6
percent.
The foreign trade deficit in said period was 47.9 billion kuna (7.85
billion).
