Four unions went on strike because the government rejected a request for a permanent monthly bonus of 300 kuna for all civil servants and employees, which would temporarily stop their salaries from lagging behind those in public services, and had not adopted decrees on higher coefficients and bonuses on special working conditions.
The unionists expect some 65,000 civil servants to participate in the strike. They are expected to address the press at 10.00 hours.
The unionists appealed to members of the public to show understanding and patience because the strike was not against them but the government, which they said was socially insensitive.
