In a statement issued on Thursday, the HHO announced the signing of a petition on 23 and 24 December in downtown Zagreb to demonstrate civic readiness to act against the existing atmosphere of what it called the general tacit acceptance of violence.
The initiative for social reconciliation was launched on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Croatian Constitution.
Violence in Croatia, ten years after the war, has without any doubt become part of everyday life again, the HHO said citing physical assaults on people of different ethnic backgrounds or beliefs, death threats to political opponents and people with unpopular views, the glorification of war crimes committed by Croatian forces, and the judicial justification of gender and/or ethnic violence.
"Attempts to use state institutions to again privatise the public television network additionally hamper the much needed public response to contagious violence, threatening to introduce a new era of censorship," the HHO said in the statement.
