BRUSSELS, Dec 12 (Hina/STA) - Foreign ministers of the European
Union, who convened in Brussels on Monday, welcomed the recent arrest of
General Ante Gotovina, and for the first time since they have been evaluating
Croatia's progress the ministers have omitted in a document a formulation on
the request for Croatia's full cooperation with the International Criminal
Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). They adopted the document
on the basis of a recent report drawn up by the European Commission.
Informally we commended Croatian and Spanish authorities as well as the
ICTY. These are very important developments, British Foreign Secretary Jack
Straw said at a news conference in Brussels, commenting on General Gotovina's
arrest.
In the document with conclusions ministers underlined the importance of
the Accession Partnership for Croatia, and voiced expectations that the
country's progress would proceed with priorities outlined in that document.
The ministers also discussed progress made by other candidate
countries, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania.
