The views President Drnovsek has recently expressed about Kosovo and Slovene-Croatian relations are not in harmony with those of the state institutions that are competent and responsible for Slovenia's foreign policy and international position, the statement said.
The statement was prompted by a growing number of requests for the Ministry to take a stand on the nature of the latest presidential initiatives.
It is important for Slovenia and its relations with other members of the European Union and with its neighbours that none of its institutions acts on its own. Well-coordinated and properly elaborated initiatives are good for Slovenia. Personal and private initiatives cannot achieve their goal and effect if the international community does not understand them and does not support them, the Foreign Ministry said.
Drnovsek has said on several occasions lately, including at last week's informal meeting with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, that if Slovenia and Croatia are unable to resolve their border dispute bilaterally the issue should be settled through international arbitration.
The Slovene president believes that the two parties have exhausted possibilities for resolving the issue bilaterally.
During the talks with Mesic, Drnovsek also expressed his reserve about Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel's view that the border dispute with Croatia should be settled during Croatia's EU membership talks and that the idea of arbitration or the case being referred to an international court was unacceptable to Slovenia at the moment.
