Speaking to reporters in the party's offices in Osijek on Wednesday, Racan said the SDP offered an alternative to the policy of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and announced a more concrete and offensive policy in months to come.
One of the SDP's goals is party reform which will also include some radical moves, Racan said, adding that he wanted to help consolidate the SDP branch in Osijek County and help it overcome internal conflicts.
Asked to comment on the appearance of bird flu in the eastern region of Slavonia and measures taken to contain it, Racan welcomed the government's decision to compensate households for poultry killed to prevent the spreading of the disease, adding that the government's reaction was good and prompt.
Asked if President Stjepan Mesic should have reacted differently to the appearance of bird flu, Racan said he did not know if President Mesic should have cut short his visit to Chile. He added that Croatia had enough competent and responsible people to take the necessary steps and that any attempt to politicise bird flu was dangerous.
Asked about the adoption of a new election law, Racan said he believed the existing law could be amended and that his party would submit its proposals. He dismissed speculation that the SDP and the HDZ were drawing up a new election law defining Croatia as a single constituency to remove smaller parties from the political scene.
