It is not up to the US to define the future status of Kosovo. It is your task to create conditions for talks, and compromises should be a part of those talks, Burns said after meeting Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova.
Burns said that his country did not favour any specific outcome of the status negotiations, but noted that the final result should make it possible for all citizens of Kosovo to live together in peace.
He said that the US strongly supported the decision of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the start of talks on the final status of Kosovo, adding that the talks should start later this year.
