ZAGREB, Sept 29 (Hina) - Deputies of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) on Thursday insisted that reports by relevant state authorities on privatisation audits proved that the opposition's claims about the privatisation process being a looting campaign were not true.

In the continuation of a debate on reports submitted by the Privatisation Fund, the State Prosecutor's Office and other competent bodies on measures taken with regard to privatisation irregularities, HDZ deputies claimed that there had been some irregularities in the 1990s privatisation process, but not as many as claimed.

The HDZ backed these claims with a report by the State Prosecutor's Office which said that irregularities were found in only 4.6 percent of audited privatisation cases.

HDZ deputy Drazen Bosnjakovic wondered how Croatia would be able to survive if the opposition's claims about the privatisation process were true, stating that failed privatisation cases were mostly due to the war, surplus labour, etc.

HDZ deputies said opposition deputies, particularly those from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), could have changed the existing law on privatisation if they believed that it had enabled privatisation irregularities.

Opposition deputies said they were appalled by the HDZ's attempts to downplay the damage privatisation caused to citizens and the state, reiterating their previous claims about privatisation as a looting campaign.

"The law was only one of the elements that enabled the organised looting. Prosecutors unwilling to prosecute were appointed, competent judges were replaced by yes-men, and people unwilling to annul privatisation cases were appointed heads of the Privatisation Fund," said Nenad Stazic of the Social Democrats (SDP).

He was supported by Milanka Opacic of the SDP, who said the HDZ's downplaying the fact that five billion German marks worth of capital and 400,000 jobs were lost in the privatisation process only showed that the HDZ still lacked the will to deal with privatisation crime.
