ZAGREB, Sept 22 (Hina) - The leader of the Trade Unions of Istria
and Kvarner, Bruno Bulic, said at a news conference in Pula on Thursday the
union strongly opposes the privatisation of the Croatian shipbuilding sector
until the government defines a clear strategy of economic development, notably
with regard to employment. If privatised, shipyards in Croatia will
become only assembly plants whose new owners will employ cheap labour and bring
equipment from their countries of origin, which would lead to the
disappearance of small and medium businesses depending on industrial
production, Bulic said.
He went on to say that more than 40,000 workers were directly or
indirectly dependent on the shipbuilding sector and that more than 10,000
workers were employed in Croatian shipyards.
The union leader added that capitalist countries which 40 years ago
were in the same situation as Croatia was today had left the shipbuilding in
state ownership.
