Carinthia wants to make Croatia's EU entry conditional on Krsko closure

Autor: mses
KLAGENFURT, March 17 (Hina) - The parliament of the Austrian province of Carinthia on Thursday called for the closure of the Krsko nuclear power plant, which is co-owned by Slovenia and Croatia, proposing that in the event that Croatia turns down this proposal, the Austrian government should veto its admission to the European Union, the Austrian APA news agency reported.

The proposal was endorsed by all major parliamentary parties, except the Greens, who are in favour of shutting down the Krsko plant, which is located in Slovenia, but they are against exerting pressure on Croatia.

Ahead of today's session, the head of the Green Party's parliamentary group, Rolf Holub, received support from Austrian Social Democrat member of the European Parliament and the EP rapporteur for Croatia, Hannes Swoboda, who distanced himself from his party which had launched this initiative.

"I disagree with it. These two things (the closure of the Krsko plant and Croatia's EU entry) should be treated separately," Swoboda was quoted as saying.
