BERLIN, July 12 (Hina) - The EU Enlargement Commissioner, Olli
Rehn, in Berlin on Tuesday met German Foreign Minister Joschka Fisher and
advocated the continuation of the EU enlargement process. He said that the
objection of the process was the admission of Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania
into the European Union and the opening of entry talks with Turkey.
We cannot make the EU enlargement the scape goat of the internal failures of
the European Union, Rehn said. He believes that "a pause for thinking" which EU
member countries leaders took at a recent meeting in Brussels must not turn
into a pause in efforts invested in achieving stability in western Balkan
countries. Rehn said that despite all one must take into consideration the
wishes of the citizens of the European Union.
Ahead of his trip to the Near East, Fisher stressed the importance
Turkey had in the process of drawing closer to the EU for the countries from
the Near East.
