The purpose of the pilot project, which was launched in September 2004, is to integrate Roma children into the Croatian education system and society as a whole.
The project is being implemented jointly by the local community, the Open Society Institute, the Council of Europe and the Norwegian government along with several non-governmental organisations.
The programme covers 72 Roma children, 54 in a primary school and 18 in a day-care centre.
Concern was expressed that only eight per cent of Roma parents attended meetings and consultations with teachers, and it was concluded that it was necessary to initiate education classes for parents.
Next year the special objective will be to include Roma children in extracurricular activities.
Beli Manastir has a 180-strong Roma community.
