"I am currently in talks with several persons who are competent jurors and excellent judges, but I have not made a final decision yet," Mesic said at a meeting with members of the public in his office.
Asked by a reporter to comment on the decision by his first candidate Ranko Marijan to withdraw his candidacy after he failed to win consent in Parliament, Mesic said he was sorry that had happened.
"Maybe the requirement of consensus is not a good idea because there is always the possibility of one vote blocking the will of the majority," the President said.
Mesic said he had chosen Marijan because he thought he would be a good president of the Supreme Court. "Marijan asked to be elected by consensus, but unfortunately that did not happen," he said.
The President of the Republic today received eight groups of citizens, including about 60 pensioners from Vukovar County and pupils from Zagreb and Slunj.
