GOSPIC, May 25 (Hina) - U.S citizen Ilisha Jarett, who is believed to have been raped by Josip Mraovic while she was a player of a local basketball club from the central Croatian town of Gospic, on Wednesday testified before an investigating judge of the Gospic County Court.

The prosecutors in the case have presented new evidence and the investigative proceedings will continue.

As she previously announced, Jarett returned from the United States to Croatia to give her testimony before the Gospic court. She declined to comment on the case for the press.

After the interview, Jarett's lawyer Dragan Jovanic said that his client's testimony was convincing and that the investigation would confirm that a serious crime had been committed.

"My client is not seeking revenge. Asked about her stay in Gospic and the club, she said her impressions were very good," the lawyer said.

"By giving a statement today she wanted to help put an end to such conduct which she considers violence," Jovanic said.

The defence lawyer for the suspect, Zvonimir Hodak, said that no act of rape had been committed. He went on to say that Jarett's testimony could be easily contested.

Asked by reporters whether the victim had asked for damages, Mraovic, a 57-year-old local businessman, said that "through my lawyer, she offered to give a truthful testimony" which he claimed would exculpate him.

Mraovic, who attended today's hearing, said that Jarett had demanded 100,000 euros in return.

The Rijeka County Prosecutor's Office insists on the continuation of investigative proceedings, Rijeka Deputy County Prosecutor Igor Bijelic said today.

"Today, the victim, basketball player Jarett, gave a detailed statement as a witness. Following her testimony and evidence the prosecutors have collected so far, the County Prosecutor's Office has moved a further investigation on which a decision will be made next week. The proceedings are continuing," Bijelic added.
