BANJA LUKA, May 8 (Hina) - Unknown persons have toppled 26
tombstones, of which some more than 200 years old, at a Muslim cemetery in
downtown Prnjavor, northern Bosnia-Herzegovina, Nezavisne Novine daily said on
Sunday, recalling that the cemetery is under state protection and on the
national heritage list. The president of the Prnjavor Islamic
Community Council, Husein Vukovic, said the vandalism was not accidental
because the tombstones were toppled between May 6 and 7, when Bosnia marks
Mosque Day.
Municipal head Vlado Zivkovic strongly condemned the incident.
On Mosque Day in 1993, the last two mosques in Banja Luka were
demolished in mine explosions, the last case of destruction of Muslim places of
worship in the Bosnian Serb entity during the war.
