During the three-week project, the experts will continue exploring locations north of the island of Vis in search of ships that sank there in the 1866 Battle of Vis.
The project is the result of the long-lasting cooperation between the Culture Ministry and the Croatian Restoration Institute on the one side and the French National Institute for Scientific Research in Marine Archeology and a specialised team for marine research from the Comex company in Marseille on the other.
The Battle of Vis, which is considered one of the greatest battles ever fought on the Adriatic Sea, saw a clash of fleets of the newly-established Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The victory of the Austro-Hungarian fleet secured the monarchy power over Dalmatia and domination on the Adriatic until World War I. Around 700 people were killed in the battle.
The purpose of the project is to locate, document and conserve shipwrecks and other findings at depths of up to 100 metres.
