Last week Kosic asked CNN to issue a public apology, warning that CNN reporter Christiane Amanpour
stated gross untruths before the TV audience when she said that by beatifying Stepinac the late pope had raised to the level of sainthood a Croat from the time when Croatian fascists were almost allies with the Catholic Church and conducted horrible persecution campaigns against Serbs during World War II.
CNN reporter John Allen confirmed Amanpur's words, concluding that for many people Stepinac was intolerably close to Ustashas, a paramilitary group in Croatia and Nazi ally.
In a letter to Kosic of two days ago, Rena Golden, senior vice president of CNN International, said that the context in which the reporters made their comments was correct.
In no moment did the reporters make specific accusations against Cardinal Stepinac, but as evidenced by the transcript, referred to past and current comments on Cardinal Stepinac's life, Golden said in her reply.
Kosic said in his statement today that he was not satisfied with the answer, and believed that CNN
was siding with those who were making accusations against Cardinal Stepinac.
"It was not just the publication of a comment, it was the selective publication of comments on the life of Cardinal Stepinac," he said.
