ZAGREB, April 16 (Hina) - Less than 10 percent of Croatian companies have their branch offices in Brussels, engage professional lobbyists or have a special department or their own experts to follow regulations and trends on the European Union market.

These are results of a recent survey which the Foundation for the Promotion of Economic Interests has carried out among 50 entities, namely units of the Croatian state administration, state-run as well as private companies.

Presenting findings at a news conference in Zagreb last week, the foundation's chairman, Zeljko Ivancevic, said they were worrying in light of the fact that the opinion poll covered selected subjects that should have economic interests in cooperation with the EU.

What was particularly a cause for concern was that 38 percent of the respondents had stated that EU institutions produced no effect on their activities which was why they did not show any interest in this field.

Three quarters of the entities covered by the survey were state-owned institutions or companies that stated that they had let the owner, namely the state, communicate with the EU. However, the state is still limiting the communication to the level of official diplomats.

Ivancevic said that therefore it was euro-ignorance rather than euro-scepticism that should be a cause for concern.
