Zeljko Sacic, chief of the special police veterans' association, today condemned Monday's decision made by local Independent Democratic Serb Part (SDSS) councillors to rename the First Guard Brigade Street into St. Sava (Serb Orthodox saint) Street and to change the name of Street of Josip Jovic (the first Croatian policeman killed at the beginning of the Defence War).
Sacic described it as evident disrespect for the fundamental values of the Croatian Constitution and the Croatian state.
Besides, to change the name of the Street of Josip Jovic, ahead of the 14th anniversary of his death, could be treated as an act of provocation, according to Sacic.
Zdravko Loncar, the head of the second-mentioned association, said that this move also showed a lack of respect for Jovic's sacrifice.
Jovic was killed at Plitvice Lakes at Easter of 1991 in an ambush set up by local Serb rebels.
Sacic and Loncar called on the Croatian government to take a position on the matter.
The nonparliamentary Croatian True Revival (HIP) party also condemned the move by SDSS councillors in Plaski.
The HIP believes that the current state authorities also have a part of responsibility for such developments in Plaski.
