ZAGREB, March 7 (Hina) - President Stjepan Mesic on Monday issued a
message on the occasion of International Women's Day saying that March 8 was
not only an opportunity to remember the start of the organised struggle for the
equality of women, but also to systematically and consistently start working
on the equality of women in the Croatian society. In the message, Mesic says that despite numerous legal and institutional
mechanisms adopted to strengthen the role of women and improve their status,
recently there has been a drastic growth in their number among the unemployed,
their wages lag behind men's, their representation in local and executive
authorities is still low, and there is an increasing number of women victims of
domestic violence.
The maturity of a society and of a democracy is measured also by the
treatment of women, Mesic said, adding he believed the Croatian society was
mature enough to make women truly equal in all areas of life.
