"In order to track down and apprehend Ante Gotovina, police officers, in cooperation with the security services and the Chief Public Prosecutor, are gathering information on Gotovina's whereabouts and persons who may be assisting him in hiding. The police are taking all the necessary steps to check the veracity of the information," Interior Ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun told Hina.
Mehun said that all police departments in the country had been ordered to intensify the search for the general after he went into hiding in 2001. "All police officers in Croatia are under orders to look for Gotovina."
The spokesman confirmed that the police had received information indicating that the general was hiding outside Croatia. "All such reports were promptly sent to the Interpol offices in the given countries for verification, but they have produced no result so far."
Mehun said that there was an international warrant for the arrest of Gotovina and that Interpol had published his photograph on its Internet page. He recalled that the Ministry of the Interior had offered a 350,000 kuna (46,000 euro) reward for information leading to Gotovina's arrest.
