Speaking to reporters and citizens at an open-air fruit and vegetable market in Zagreb, Mesic accused the police of "being increasingly in the service of one party because they sanction the removal of a poster from a place where no posters are allowed".
The HDZ's Karlovac branch said on Friday that members of Mesic's election team had torn down Kosor's election posters in Duga Resa, about 60 kilometres southwest of Zagreb, and that misdemeanour charges had been pressed against Mesic's bodyguard Perica Martinovic because he refused to show his ID to the police after he was caught in the act of removing Kosor's posters.
"My posters are scribbled with various messages, and the police have not responded to that. On the other hand, when someone, I do not know who, removes a Jadranka Kosor poster from a tree, the police respond right away rather than appreciate that someone has removed the poster from the place where it should not have been," Mesic told reporters when asked to comment on the incident.
"It seems to me that the police are again in the service of one party, but we will change that in the next five years," he added.
Mesic also commented on allegations that some of his campaign donors did not have good business results and that they were not paying their employees.
"Some of them may not be operating with the best of results, but I cannot know this because I cannot go into their business operations," he said, calling on her opponent to reveal the names of her donors.
